Chapter 17

REWARD

“Follow me.”

Who died and made you the boss, I almost said aloud. Forming the core restored my confidence in my abilities, and the damage that I had inflicted on the pillar only confirmed my prowess as a fighter. And once my body was ready to accept the entire arsenal of techniques from my previous life...

“Oh, it’s over for you, bitches.”

“Forgive me for speaking so openly,” I bowed, “but who are you and why should I follow you? I don’t remember seeing you among the governor’s guards.”

The man raised his eyebrows in surprise.

“I’m an imperial magister. You’ve been ordered to come with me.”

I noticed veins pulsating on his temple. Did my ignorance offend him so badly? Still, he was a magister, and I, as an imperial subject, had to obey. However, as a shang, I had the right to demand an explanation.

“I’m Yang Wu, a shang of the eighth generation. As such, I demand an explanation from the imperial magister who still, might I add, refuses to identify himself.”

The fact that I refused to move and had the gall to demand anything made the magister twitch as if from a slap. One might think that he was taking this rather personally.

“By the order of Magister Liao, you are hereby summoned to testify in the case of the attack on Thunder Pearl, conducted by the criminal organization known as the Spiders.” The magister glared at me. “Follow. Me.”

As I walked, observing the soaring falcon on the magister’s back, I wondered how I should behave. Acting like a modest scholar wouldn’t work too well, so perhaps I’d be better off pretending to be an enthusiastic idiot in search of his Path. What annoyed me the most, however, was that I had no idea who this Liao guy was, what he knew, and what he wanted from me. Therefore, I couldn’t lie too much. He definitely didn’t need to know about Ardana, but I supposed that it wouldn’t hurt telling him about the Spiders.

My guide stopped so abruptly that I almost bumped into him. Did he do that on purpose?

“This way.” Man, what an unpleasant, dry voice he had. He didn’t seem to like me very much and he wasn’t scared to show it. I was still feeling slightly off from the treatment so I kept my comments to myself and focused. “They’re expecting you.”

Without waiting for me, he opened the door to the familiar meeting room. Except, this time, Hwang wasn’t sitting at the head of the table. No. His chair remained unoccupied.

What was going on here?

Grandpa and Hwang sat on one side of the table. Next to them was another empty chair — for me, by the looks of it. On the other side were three rather colorful characters. The first man looked like a samurai from a Kurosawa movie — skinny, dressed in a kimono, and with the same silly hairstyle. My gaze slid to his chest, adorned with a soaring crane, and I heard the inner voice speak up again.
